School Hours

1)    Q What time does school begin each day?  
 
A School begins each morning at 8:00 a.m.  Students may enter the building when our first school bus arrives, usually about 7:20 a.m.  Those who arrive before 7:45 a.m. should report to either the cafeteria (K-2) or the library (3-5).   Please note :  Students in grades 3-5 should report to the cafeteria first if they need to eat breakfast and then return to the library until 7:45.  Breakfast is served at Butterfield beginning at 7:20 a.m. each morning   .  (Students who wish to eat breakfast need to arrive at school BEFORE 7:45 a.m. to allow time to eat and get to class on time.)   After 7:45 a.m., students go to their classrooms.

It is imperative that students arrive on time!  Heavy traffic near and on the school campus becomes a problem around 7:40.  If you bring your child to school, please consider the extra time needed for the traffic situation so that your child can arrive to school on time. Students arriving after 8:00 must report to the office to obtain a tardy slip before reporting to class.

2)   Q What time does school end?  

A The school day officially ends at 3:00 p.m., although our buses/daycares often begin loading a few minutes prior to that time. Buses are dismissed first, followed by our walkers, bike riders and car riders. Walkers, bike riders, and car riders are dismissed only after all buses have left the campus.

3)   Q Who should I notify if my child will be absent from school?  

A Please call the school office before 8:45 a.m. if possible when a student is staying home. Send a note of explanation to the school office on the day of his/her return if you have not already called.

4)   Q What has Butterfield done about school safety?  

A Extra attention is continuously given to emergency procedure inservice for staff members, school visitor rules, access to students, playground safety, traffic safety, and programs designed to teach students about safety issues.

We are ALWAYS interested in parent input concerning safety issues!   Do not hesitate to call the school principal if you have an idea!

5)   Q Is bus service available?  

A Generally, bus service is available for students who live farther than 2 miles from school. However, because of safety issues for walkers, we do have some routes closer to school. We will have more specific bus route information

6)   Q What about bicycles?  

A Students are allowed to ride bicycles to school. However, once they reach school property, they must dismount and walk their bikes to the school building. All bikes must be parked in the bike racks located near the portable buildings on the north side of the school.

7)   Q Are there adult crossing guards to assist students who walk to school?  

A From 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the morning and from 3:00 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. each afternoon an adult crossing guard is stationed at:


  • the corner of Rolling Hills and Old Missouri Road
  • the intersection of Eton and Old Missouri Road (directly in front of the school) and
  • the entrance to the school parking lots

Students should always wait for the crossing guard's instructions before attempting to cross the street.  Parents should also talk to their child about a contingency plan should the crossing guard not be there for any reason.

8)   Q Lunch? Breakfast?  

A The Fayetteville Public Schools serves nutritious meals each day, and on most days students are offered a couple of choices for lunch.  The cost for student lunch is $2.15 per day.  Breakfast costs $1.50 per day.  Free and reduced price meals are available for those students who qualify.  Milk may be purchased for $.30. 

With our computerized accounting system you may pay for meals in advance.  Parents often deposit money for a week or a month at a time in their child's account.  For younger students, it is best to send their lunch money in a sealed envelope with their name and amount to be deposited clearly printed on the outside.  Of course, your child is welcome to bring their lunch to school.  If they do, please make sure to send it in containers they can easily open themselves.  Your child may still purchase milk to have with their lunch.  If they bring a drink, it should be sent in a resealable container whenever possible.   If you or other guests are coming to eat lunch with your child, it's very important that you call the school office prior to 8:45 a.m. to order a tray.    Our cafeteria must have this information in order to prepare an appropriate amount of food.  Visitor lunch price (adult or child) is $2.90.

9)   Q What if my child gets sick at school?  

A If your child becomes sick (or hurt) at school, he/she will be evaluated by the school nurse, or in her absence, other designated staff members.  If the illness appears serious, we will contact you immediately.  If you are unavailable, we will call the emergency contacts you list on the information card kept in the office .  Please make sure you fill out and return that card as soon as you receive it.  Be sure to notify us when there are changes in home address, work, and emergency contact phone number or names. 

10)   Q What if my child needs to take medication during the school day?  

A School personnel will administer medication to students under the following conditions:

· ALL medications , including cough drops and other over-the-counter medications must  be kept in the office and administered by school personnel.

· The medication must be in the original container with the child's name, the name of the drug, and directions for use clearly printed on the label.  Medication wrapped in tissue, foil, baggies, envelopes, or other material will not be accepted.

· Parents must complete a "Medication Administration Release Form".  The form can be picked up in the school office.

· No medication will be given without a permission slip signed by the parent.

11)   Q What is the policy on parent visitors/volunteers?  

A Parents are welcome to visit the school!  However,  All visitors must report to the office, sign in, and get a visitor badge prior to entering any other part of the school building.   If you wish to visit a classroom, it is best to call ahead and make an appointment.

There are numerous opportunities for volunteering at Butterfield.  Watch for additional information regarding our volunteer program.

12)   Q Does Butterfield have a parent organization?  

A Yes!  We are fortunate to have a very active and supportive Parent Teacher Organization!  Our PTO provides tremendously valuable services to our students and staff!  There are lots of ways to serve.  You are encouraged to get involved with PTO!

13)   Q How will I know what's going on in my child's classroom?  

A We encourage open communication between home and school.  Each staff member has an e-mail address, and of course, you are welcome to phone the school and leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.

Butterfield teachers send home weekly (sometimes more often) reports to keep you informed of classroom happenings and your child's progress (The Monday Bronco Folder).  A formal report card is issued at the end of each quarter.  Interim parent reports are sent at the 5 th  or 6 th  week of school.

14)   Q If I need to pick my child up early, what are the procedures?  

A Any student leaving school prior to 3:00 p.m.  must  be checked out through the school office.   Please do not enter the classroom to get your child   .  We will gladly have them called to the office for you.   Please avoid coming in on a regular basis right before school is dismissed to check your child out early and avoid dismissal traffic.
